From MDF to PS: Why Global Contractors are Shifting to Polystyrene Interior Mouldings?

Tin tức công ty mới nhất về From MDF to PS: Why Global Contractors are Shifting to Polystyrene Interior Mouldings?

In the realm of interior finishing, the material evolution of skirting and decorative mouldings is undergoing a technological revolution. Traditionally, Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) dominated the market due to cost advantages. However, as the global construction industry demands higher durability, sustainability, and efficiency, High-Density Polystyrene (PS) Mouldings have become the preferred choice for top-tier contractors and engineers.

Performance Benchmarking: Why MDF is Losing Ground?

The core pain point of MDF lies in its physical structural limitations. As a pressed wood-fiber material, it is highly susceptible to water absorption, swelling, mildew, and eventual rot when exposed to moisture.

In contrast, according to the Interior PS wall panel series technical specifications, PS mouldings demonstrate superiority in the following dimensions:

  • Total Waterproof Performance: PS material is naturally hydrophobic. In high-humidity environments like bathrooms or basements, PS profiles will not deform due to moisture, ensuring the long-term aesthetics of the wall base.
  • Dimensional Stability: MDF is prone to shrinking or cracking caused by seasonal temperature and humidity fluctuations. PS mouldings maintain a stable molecular structure post-extrusion, solving the industry-wide issue of joint cracking.
  • Termite and Pest Resistance: Wood-based materials always face termite risks. As a high-density polymer, PS provides no biological nutrients, fundamentally eliminating pest threats.
Selection Guide: Matching Specs to Engineering Needs

When transitioning from MDF to PS, procurement managers should select models based on specific application scenarios:

1. Large-Scale Profiles for Luxury Spaces

For high-ceiling lobbies or commercial spaces, it is recommended to select profiles with heights between 150mm and 180mm. For instance, S1001 (180.0 mm) is the tallest option in the documentation. These products provide a strong visual presence and are much easier to install and secure than heavy solid wood or MDF.

2. Precision Fit for Minimalist Styles

For projects pursuing an "invisible" decorative effect, the S21001 (7.0 mm thickness) is an excellent choice. Its ultra-slim profile is difficult to achieve with MDF (which becomes brittle when thin), saving space and perfectly complementing modern frameless designs.

3. Multi-functional Concealment Needs

Certain models, such as the S13001, feature a thickness of 30.0 mm. This deep design allows contractors to utilize the space behind the moulding for cable management, effectively hiding wiring—a functional advantage ordinary slim MDF cannot offer.

Construction Efficiency and Long-term Economic Analysis

While the unit price of PS may be slightly higher than low-end MDF, its ROI (Return on Investment) over the project lifecycle is significantly higher:

  • Paint-Free Delivery: PS products typically come with high-quality surface finishes. This means no on-site sanding, priming, or painting is required, shortening construction timelines by 30%-50%.
  • Low Maintenance Costs: PS profiles are washable and impact-resistant. In high-traffic areas like hotels or offices (scenarios covered by the S8001 series), their resilience significantly reduces the frequency of repairs and replacements.
